Effective communication is fundamental to creating a learning environment where students can thrive.
In a recent video interview, Elation Communications President and CEO Jerrica Thurman conducted a Q&A with marketing communications guru Susanna Trate. With 20 years in the industry, Susanna held a successful leadership role in the printing sector before transitioning to active involvement in her local community Parent Teacher Association (PTA) as the marketing vice president for her son’s school.
“I had to step back and think about who my audience was and how I was going to message and speak to them. My background is business-to-business (B2B). I’m used to working with major corporations so, when I moved into the parent role and PTA, I was communicating with staff and administrators, caregivers, parents, and kindergarten through fifth grade students,” Susanna said. “I realized communication at the elementary education level is everything. It’s the starting block for these young, impressionable minds.”
Effective communication is fundamental to creating a positive and supportive learning environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Communication is adaptive, and today’s students start at a young age learning to embrace innovative communications. From web-based platforms, like Google Classroom, to social media, emails, phone calls, and mobile apps, school systems have begun integrating several media forms to facilitate viable interactions among students, parents, teachers and other key stakeholders.
“Our school has done a great job. They’ve hired an equity officer who works to drill down and pull together the data of the backgrounds of all our kids, and tailor communications to their backgrounds,” Susanna said. “This helps to identify when foreign language translation may be necessary.”
Susanna addresses critical issues of communications in education during the 20-minute interview with Jerrica. They discuss why it’s important, how the evolution of media impacts education, ways to create support for innovative communication practices in education, and how effective communication can enhance learning.
