Inclusive Communication and Autism
Inclusive communications involves using language and methods that consider the diverse needs of individuals, including people with autism.
In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, Elation Communications President and CEO Jerrica Thurman conducted a video interview with GiGi Sheppard, founder of Noah’s Buddy Foundation and Noah’s Buddy Box, an online retail store at www.noahsbuddybox.com. These initiatives raise awareness and support for children and adults with special needs. GiGi is the mother of Noah, a 10-year-old boy genetically enhanced with autism and trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome. She created the company to provide a delightful selection of clothing, toys, books, and accessories, all thoughtfully chosen to cater to the unique needs and preferences of people with special requirements.
GiGi addressed why inclusive and accessible communications is important for people with autism. “We want to foster understanding between the neurodivergent and neurotypical communities. It’s important to understand the issues people with autism face and work together to come up with communication structures and opportunities that reduce their stress and anxiety, enhance their quality of life, and support their independence,” she said.
Communicating with people with autism can present unique challenges due to differences in social communication and interaction skills. GiGi shared, “Autistic individuals can have difficulty understanding and using verbal and nonverbal cues and social interactions. They can have trouble maintaining eye contact, understanding tone of voice, and interpreting facial expressions and gestures. They may also struggle with using language in context, nonverbal communication, and sensory sensitivities to noise, touch, and light.”
GiGi shares strategies for effective communication with people with autism during the 16-minute interview with Jerrica. They discuss how communities can better support people with autism through acceptance and inclusive communications. Learn more about this relevant topic. Take time to tune in!
