Inclusive Communication: Empowering Children With Disabilities to Learn

When communication is inclusive, it sends a powerful message that every child belongs in the classroom.

Inclusive communications breaks down barriers that hinder learning for children with disabilities. By using a variety of communications methods, educators can ensure that all students have access to information and can participate fully in the learning process. In a recent video interview, Elation Communications President and CEO Jerrica Thurman discusses how inclusive communications empowers children with disabilities to learn with Dr. DeShawn Chapman, founder of Equity Learning Bridge.

An expert on educational leadership, Dr. Chapman is also the manager of community engagement and partnerships for the University of Central Florida College of Community Innovation and Education. Through her Equity Learning Bridge initiative, she produces the Be Ready Podcast to discuss ideas to bridge families, communities, and schools so children can thrive in learning through products and services that advance educational equity. The podcast offers a space for educators of all types and adults who care about the educational well-being of children to share and learn together.

Dr. Chapman offers her unique perspectives on how inclusive communications helps bridge the learning gap for children with disabilities. She highlights ways educators can implement inclusive communications in the classroom.

“Inclusive communications is critically important, and it’s at the essence of equity. It’s really about creating on-ramps around communication for everyone to be able to thrive and be their best selves, particularly for all students in the classroom,” Dr. Chapman said. “It’s important for students to be communicated with in ways that lead them to the goal. I believe all kids can learn, all kids can reach whatever the goal is for them, and it’s up to parental educators, traditional educators, and educators in nonprofit spaces to figure out what’s the best way to communicate with the child. We can unlock the potential of every child by creating an environment that embraces all learners, regardless of their abilities,” she said.

Dr. Chapman explains how educators can become inclusive communicators to advance educational equity. Inclusive communications allows for the personalization of learning experiences to meet the unique needs of each child. This might include adapting teaching methods to suit different learning styles, providing multiple ways for students to demonstrate their knowledge, and offering choices in how information is presented and received. She addresses how communities can practice autism acceptance through inclusive communications and the importance of communities of support during the 20-minute interview with Jerrica. She presents approaches that help create a level playing field, allowing children with disabilities to engage with the curriculum on equal terms with their peers.
