Inclusive Communication in Human Resources Practices

Human Resources (HR) plays a pivotal role in setting the tone for inclusivity within an organization, and effective communication practices are at the heart of this mission.

Inclusive communications in HR practices is essential for creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered. By building trust, tailoring communication to diverse needs, promoting cultural competence, and encouraging diverse input, HR professionals can foster an inclusive environment that drives engagement and success.

In a recent interview, Elation Communications President and CEO Jerrica Thurman discusses how inclusive communications is vital to human resources practices with Pamela McGee, CEO of Genuine Executive Management Solutions, a human resources consulting firm specializing in HR consulting, government contracting partnerships, and supporting veterans transitioning into the workforce. McGee also serves as the 2024 president of Greater Orlando Society for Human Resource Management. McGee is a strategic architect, recognized for her ability to develop innovative HR initiatives that streamline processes and drive organizational growth. She previously served as assistant vice president of human resources, talent management, and total rewards at Valencia College. She holds certifications from both the Society for Human Resource Management and Human Resources Certificate Institute and has over 30 years of performance-driven experience, including 25+ years in human resources management and talent acquisition, and expertise in corporate government and employment laws.

McGee explains, when HR professionals prioritize inclusive communications, they help establish psychological safety within the organization. She emphasizes this allows employees to voice their ideas and concerns without fear of judgment, take calculated risks and innovate, and admit mistakes and learn from them. As a result, teams become more collaborative, creative, and resilient. She highlights that companies that prioritize inclusivity tend to have higher employee engagement, lower turnover rates, and improved overall performance.

McGee also defines inclusive communications in the context of human resources and explains why it is important in HR practices. She provides examples of how inclusive communications in HR practices impacts employee engagement and retention and contributes to fostering a positive organizational culture. She also addresses how to measure the effectiveness of inclusive communications efforts in HR and outlines the evolving role of inclusive communications in HR over the next five years.

A strong proponent of HR best practices, McGee emphasizes the importance of putting inclusive communications into action. It’s about more than just speaking inclusively—it’s about building a culture where everyone feels heard and valued. “Investing in inclusive communications is not just a best practice; it’s a commitment to a more equitable and thriving workplace,” she says. McGee reveals how prioritizing inclusivity in HR communications is the key to unlocking the full potential of a diverse workforce during the 21-minute interview.
